Narrative

Elinor recently sent me the birth and death dates for her parents. Virginia T. Weeks died Feb. 13, 1981. "Pop" Weeks, her husband, was born 8/23/1885 and died 6/30/1960. I had sent her a copy of Judi Abbott's and George Eastman's web pages that included her parents and she said her father's birthdate was incorrect. I've written to both Judi and George. Pop Weeks's parents listed below are correct. Virginia

We have the following clipping from the Newark, N. J., Call:

"One of the pilots in the international balloon race, which starts from Birmingham, Ala., on October 28, in which England, France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland and the United States will have entrants, is Harold Eastman Weeks, a graduate of the Montclair High School, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, who was last week promoted to a captaincy in the United States Army. Captain Weeks will represent the United States Army in the race. The young man is the eldest son of Harry Weeks, an old resident of Montclair. He has been stationed at Ross Field Balloon School, Arcadia, Cal.

"Last September he was selected to represent the United States Army in the national balloon race, which also had its start at Birmingham. He and Lieutenant Thompson, from Fort Omaha, piloted Army Balloon No. 1, which landed five miles east of Bridgetown, Ontario, Can. The Montclair man's balloon was up forty hours and ten minutes and reached an altitude of 30,000 feet. It was second in the race, being beaten by only one mile and one-twelfth. Eleven balloons were entered in the race. Captain Weeks enlisted in the army in 1917 and went to the balloon school at Omaha, Neb., where he graduated at the head of his class. Thence he was sent to Ohio State University and from there to Arcadia, where he was made second lieutenant. Since the war he has remained at Arcadia as instructor in aeronautics, mechanical drawing, radio aerial photography and electricity."

Harold Eastman Weeks (1886 - 1960) worked as the Coordinating Engineer in the Electrical Systems Bureau of the Brooklyn Edison Company, one of the major participants in Brooklyn’s electrification. He was a relative of John Wingate Weeks, a Republican Senator and the 48th U.S. Secretary of War (1921-1925). Aside from his regular job duties at the Brooklyn Edison Company, Mr. Weeks took on several other responsibilities, serving as public utility instructor (a position he also held at the New York Edison Company), and holding membership in both the Technical Advisory Committee and the Brooklyn Edison Club (by which he coordinated company social events). He was also an active member of several professional organizations. Mr. Weeks resided at 20 Willow Street, Brooklyn, and was married to Dr. Virginia Travell Weeks, a Brooklyn pediatrician and sister of Dr. Janet Davidson Travell, President John F. Kennedy’s Personal Physician. He died in Lake Placid, New York, in 1960.

The Harold E. Weeks Diaries consist of seven diaries from the period 1925-1932 (a diary does not exist for 1928) and are arranged chronologically. Each diary documents the day-to-day operations of the Electrical System Bureau of the Brooklyn Edison Company. They also contain references-in the form of numerous enclosures-to local, national and international news events; public utilities; city planning and infrastructure; population estimates; the banking industry; the commodities markets; aeronautics; and the private life of Mr. Weeks.
